Emergency Peak-Hour Protest

Don’t hand asylum seekers back to Sri Lanka!
5.30-6.30pm Wednesday 9 July
At the intersection of Northbourne Ave and Barry Drive
Scott Morrison has now admitted that 41 asylum seekers from Sri Lanka have been handed back to the Sri Lankan Navy – the very people they fled and fear. Apparently their claims for asylum were assessed by teleconference on board ship by asking them just four questions. He still refuses to say what has happened to another boat carrying 153 Tamil asylum seekers. All of this is in breach of the most basic obligations we have under international law and common decency.
Abbott and Morrison claim that Sri Lanka is safe. The United Nations High Commission for Human Rights disagrees. Conservative Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper boycotted the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in November last year to protest Sri Lanka’s violations of the human rights of its Tamil minority. British PM made a speech criticising its human rights record.
Don’t let this outrage happen in our name! Let Canberra see at peak hour that there are many who will fight these policies.
