On 19 October 2001, 353 asylum seekers lost their lives trying to reach Australia when the vessel carrying them, known as SIEV-X, capsized. A group of Australians, despite opposition from the Federal government, created a memorial for these asylum seekers in Weston Park. The intention of the memorial is to remember the SIEV-X victims and to state that ‘Australia is not a country defined by fear and greed; love is stronger than fear; kindness is stronger than greed’.
Please join us at the memorial on the 15th anniversary of this tragedy to remember those who were lost and also those still languishing in detention. This will be a time for remembering, meditation and prayer.
Seating will not be provided, so please bring something to sit on if you will require this
Directions: Follow the entrance road from Yarralumla into Weston Park to the end of the road at Kurrajong Point.
