RAC Releases November 2025 Discussion Paper: Confronting Racism and Building Solidarity

The Refugee Action Committee (RAC) has released its November 2025 discussion paper, outlining urgent political developments and strategic proposals for the coming months. The paper highlights the growing influence of far-right anti-immigration movements both internationally and within Australia, and the need for a renewed, united response from refugee advocates and multicultural communities.

Across the globe, right-wing parties have increasingly weaponised refugee and migration issues to promote xenophobic and racist agendas. This trend has impacted Australian politics, with recent developments such as the rise of the “March for Australia” anti-immigration rallies and the fallout from the Voice referendum defeat emboldening far-right figures and parties.

Domestically, while the government has begun granting permanent visas to some refugees affected by the flawed “fast track” process, serious concerns remain. Offshore detention continues, and policies toward transitory persons and those still in PNG remain harsh and inhumane.

In response, RAC proposes a three-pronged strategy:

  1. Continue long-term opposition to Australia’s refugee policies, exposing their racist and inhumane nature.
  2. Link refugee advocacy to broader anti-racist and pro-multicultural efforts, countering the narrative pushed by anti-immigration groups.
  3. Begin early planning for Palm Sunday 2026, with the rally slogan “Refugees and Migrants – Welcome Here!” and a push for formal endorsements from unions, churches, and community organisations.

The paper also reflects on recent actions, including the successful public meeting “Debunking Racist Myths about Immigration,” and stresses the importance of peaceful, independent mobilisations to avoid confrontations that could undermine the movement.

RAC invites all supporters to join the working group for Palm Sunday 2026 and help build a broad, inclusive campaign that stands firmly against racism and justice for refugees.
