Over many years we have been bitterly disappointed that Labor, while in government, has introduced and supported a system of mandatory detention in which asylum seekers who have broken no law and been charged with no crime have been locked behind razor wire with no limit on their detention. We have been shocked that Labor re-opened the Howard government’s “Pacific Solution” in which the horrors and trauma of Manus Island and Nauru are inflicted on people already traumatised by their experiences.
There is a humane and rational alternative to these cruel policies, and that is for Australia to fairly and rapidly process asylum seeker applications in the region and provide successful applicants with safe passage to Australia, just as we did in the resettlement of Indochinese refugees in the 1970s and 1980s.
At the upcoming Labor National Conference in late July, delegates will be deciding on, among other things, a platform which will bind a future Labor government on asylum seeker and refugee policy. Join community, faith-based, Labor and union groups in the leadup to the conference to call on delegates to adopt a humane solution. It’s time for Labor to stand up for the rights of refugees.
