This Wednesday, the High Court will deliver their ruling on an important challenge to the legality of Australia’s offshore detention policies. A victory for the government in the High Court will open the door for them to send 260 people, including 72 children (33 of which were born in Australia), offshore – something Immigration Minister Peter Dutton threatened earlier this month. Those who face deportation are terrified of being sent back.

The hell-like conditions in Australia’s offshore detention centres are well-known. Countless health care workers and other whistleblowers who have been in these centres have testified to the Senate and shared with the media the first-hand accounts of the physical, mental and sexual abuse of asylum seekers they witnessed. A number of respected human rights bodies have also published damning reports, including Amnesty and the Australian Human Rights Commission. It is no secret. That Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is threatening to send others there, including 72 children, is utterly shameful.

Refugee advocates around the country are holding snap actions on Thursday, 4 February, to demand Dutton promise no further deportations to Nauru or Manus Island. Please join us at the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Barry Drive from 5:30pm to add your voice to this call. Don’t let Dutton deport innocent people to face further harm and abuse!

Some of us will also be at the High Court on Wednesday from 8:30am to show solidarity with the lawyers representing the asylum seekers. The ruling is expected to be delivered at around 10am, and people are welcome to join us. For more information please contact mail@refugeeaction.org
