12pm Saturday, 5 December

2015 has been a big year for the refugee rights campaign and for Canberra RAC. The thousands who gathered in Garema Place in October formed the largest refugee rally Canberra has seen for over a decade. Over the last 11 months, Canberra has had public meetings, protests, open letters in The Canberra Times and vigils.

We’ve seen the launch of Unionists for Refugees, Academics for Refugees and refugee action groups at University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University. These have joined the already successful efforts by the Faith-Based Working Group, ANU RAC and Rainbow RAC.

We need to keep up and increase the pressure next year, in anticipation of the federal election, and build on the small but significant wins the refugee movement has had. To prepare for 2016 and discuss how to best achieve that aim, activists will gather for a RAC planning meeting on Saturday, 5 December.

To contribute to discussions at the planning meeting, the RAC Steering Committee has drafted a report covering the political context and the campaign to date – the document is available here: http://refugeeaction.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/RAC-Planning-Meeting-2015.docx

We’ll start off with a BBQ at 12 noon to catch up with and get to know activists involved in the various arms of the campaign. The meeting itself will run from 1-4pm, and be followed by drinks.

Agenda:
* the political environment and emerging developments
* 2015 – the campaign in review
* orienting for for 2016
* steering committee elections

If you’d like to stand in the elections please email mail@refugeeaction.org for more information.
