Activist Call-Out: Refugee Week and Beyond

Hopefully you have seen the RAC email that went out late last week outlining a few of the upcoming events some of which are part of Refugee Week, but not exclusively. We are asking for activists and supporters of RAC to help with the following activities:

  1. Mon 18 June (tomorrow), 9.30-11.30am  Parl House lawns – #RoofOverOurHead action. This is a RCoA / ASRC initiative which RAC is supporting. Please come along, even if it is just for short while.
  2. Tues 19 June5-6pm, Garema Place – Vigil for the person who died on Friday in Australia’s offshore prison on Nauru. Tragically another person has taken their life in Australia’s offshore detention nightmare. Please join us on Tues to mourn this loss.
  3. Sat 23 June – on the last day of Refugee Week, come along and be part of a RAC stall at a local suburban shopping centre. If you can be involved, flick an email to to let us know whether you can do a north or south side location and what time you’d be available. Determination of locations and times will depend on how many people can be involved.
  4. Sat 30 June, 2pm, Castle Room, King O’Malleys, Civic – Election / ALP Conf strategy discussion. This is an informal gathering open to anyone who wants to be part of a discussion on how the refugee rights campaign might intervene in the next Federal election and in the upcoming ALP National Conference.
  5. July 19 – Deliver a cake to local Federal MPs to mark 5 years since Rudd announced ‘no asylum seeker arriving by boat will ever permanently settle in Australia’. The idea of delivering a cake to each of our local Fed MPs ‘marking their complicity through silence’ was suggested at the General Meeting. For this to happen, there needs to be people willing to take carriage of it as the Steering Committee is not able to take this on. Do you want to be part of this action? Please flick us an email if you’re interested.
