Manus and Nauru are not safe for refugees. Our politicians stand idly by while refugees – including children – are harassed, beaten, raped, murdered and abused by local residents and detention centre staff alike. Several victims of this bipartisan policy have chosen or attempted to end their lives rather than continue suffering under this oppressive regime. As recently as last Monday, another asylum seeker – Iranian man Hamed Shamshiripour – was found dead on Manus Island under questionable circumstances.
The ‘US Deal’ is no solution. Malcolm Turnbull has given Trump an easy out, saying “You can decide to take them or not… It is entirely up to you.” Trump even said of Australia’s policy, “you’re worse than I am.”
The overwhelming majority of ACT residents think we should allow them into Australia – so why have all of our federal MPs remained silent? It’s not good enough to say we should look to third country resettlement when the Government clearly lacks both the will and the means to make this happen in a fair and timely manner. With no guarantee of third-country resettlement, time is running out for the refugees and asylum seekers. People are dying while the government meanders along with bipartisan support from the Labor Party. The only real solution is to bring them here now.
On Tuesday August 22 and Wednesday August 23, Canberra RAC will assemble outside the offices of all four ACT Federal Members of Parliament to demand that they do their jobs as representatives of the people and call on the government to bring the refugees and asylum seekers currently detained on Manus and Nauru to Australia immediately.
