Canberra RAC’s first General Meeting of 2016 was held Tuesday 31 January in the Manning Clark Centre, ANU. It was encouraging to see strong attendance and people energised to build the campaign to new levels in 2017. After healthy discussion, the meeting endorsed several key motions which were brought before it. These included a proposal for a public protest meeting calling on Canberra’s federal MPs to break their silence on the injustices of refugee policy, a plan for a rally in Civic Square on Palm Sunday along with an accompanying ‘fringe installation’ depicting conditions on Nauru, and endorsement for a national conference to be held in Canberra on May 20-21 with a view to establishing an authoritative national coordinating body for the refugee and asylum seeker rights campaign.
